I’ve been dragging my feet over the past few weeks with regard to improving my GeoSmart geolocation plugin for WordPress as i’ve been inundated with tons of work lately. Many people have been waiting on an update and my email inbox is populated with emails regarding various aspects of the software. Today, I finally got a chance to push out a well overdue updated version of the software. GeoSmart v1.0.8 is a minor update conatining bug fixes and a few other minor improvements to the plugin. Changes include:
- Improved error handling
- Support for PHP installations compiled without the cURL extension
- Internationalization and language support
- Fix for CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION issue experienced by users running PHP in safe mode or with an open basedir set.
This as I said before is a minor update and I am already working on a major version update with some pretty cool features. I won’t spill the beans though, you’ll have to keep guessing. If you’re already using the GeoSmart plugin, I am very happy that you find the software useful. Donations toward improving the software are always welcome and if that is a stretch, an email with some feedback and suggestions are an excellent alternative. A sincere thank you to all of you who have already given me feedback or have made donations and sent thank you emails. You can upgrade to the latest version of GeoSmart on the plugins page in your WordPress admin panel. If you aren’t using GeoSmart you should give it a try. Hi Samuel,
This plugin looks great! However can it be used just for people visiting the site and not for replies to posts?
My site is not that busy so I have no worries about exceeding the Google limit.

@Paul – Thanks! It certainly can, I’m working on introducing that functionality in GeoSmart version 2.0
looks interesting. How could one modify the comments so that instead of capturing a location the commenter enters an address or coordinates?
Hello there, great plugin for WordPress. But is it possible to instead eg, Matthew from Canada change that from Canada to just the Canadian Flag?

@Matthew – That functionality is indeed possible albeit a bit awkward. I’m including it in GeoSmart v2.0. Thanks for the suggestion.

GeoSmart 2.0 should be released in a beta version on Monday October 12.
