Today, I finally decided to sign up for a PayPal account, mainly because I need an avenue through which to receive donations for a Wordpress plugin I just wrote. I started the process and was going through the motions when I came across a screen asking me to select my country. After selecting Jamaica, I was very unpleasantly surprised to see the page automatically reload completely in Spanish. What sheer ignorance. From a company with such vast international reach (PayPal is a subsidiary of eBay). Maybe someone needs to write me a memo but I can’t recall ever hearing Bob Marley sing One Love in Spanish. I am pretty sure that Sean Paul and Shaggy aren’t reggaeton artistes and I am 110% sure that when Usain Bolt said ‘To Di World’ in Beijing he was not speaking in some Spanish dialect. PayPal, that is sloppy. Very sloppy. As a Jamaican I feel offended and as an intellectual I am shocked and appalled. I know I’m not overreacting, this is a downright travesty. PayPal, you need to fix your website. Either that or kick rocks. And no, I don’t know how to say that in Spanish.

PayPal prides itself on being able to manage money worldwide in every currency you can think of. Yet they can’t get Jamaica’s official language right. That is pretty sloppy.
Maybe it was a bug?

Hi Samuel.
Just came across your Blog. Your problem must have been a bug. Both my wife and I established accounts with PayPal a few years and have not had that problem. I know a number of other persons here in Ja. who have setup up their accounts also with no problems.
In the upper right-hand corner of the PayPal Register/Login screen, you can select your country/language.
Hope this helps and hope by now you have solved the problem.
that happens sometimes….I’m Jamaican too and i speak patois but also English……..when i first signed up with PayPal it happened…shocked….but i gave it a couple seconds and it adjusted…..people depend on technology too much….observe that no system is perfect and everything has a few glitches at times….hopefully you’ve looked past that and got your PayPal anyway……sometimes observing is better than assumption
